History of India

The first known civilization settled along the Indus River in what is now Pakistan. India became separated and was only reunified with the arrival of Muslims from the west. Delhi was established as a major center of political power and the Indian capital. The late 16th and early 17th centuries in the history of India were characterized by Moghul influence. After The British invasion the campaign for independence began in India. As a result the Indian National Congress was formed in 1885. India has been a democratic republic, with the first proper elections taking place in 1951. The Congress Party has governed India for most of the time since independence. The division of East and West Pakistan in 1971 influenced greatly the political system of India. Indian foreign policy is dominated by relations with Pakistan. On December 26, 2005, the tsunami struck the southeast coast of India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As for the economy India's energy requirements are met by oil, most of which is imported.
