The first known civilization settled along the Indus River in what is now Pakistan. India became separated and was only reunified with the arrival of Muslims from the west. The division of East and West Pakistan in 1971 influenced greatly the political system of India. Indian foreign policy is dominated by relations with Pakistan. On December 26, 2005, the tsunami struck the southeast coast of India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As for the economy India's energy requirements are met by oil, most of which is imported.
